A non-invasive medical imaging examination using a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed cross-sectional images of internal structures, including soft tissues, organs, the brain, spinal cord, joints, muscles, heart, liver and kidneys. Patients remain still inside the MRI scanner and can use headphones, choose music or radio, and receive earplugs if needed. An intravenous gadolinium contrast injection may occasionally be required. Most scans need no special preparation, but abdominal examinations require fasting for 8 hours. Bring your referral form, Medicare card, pension or concession card, and any prior imaging. MRI technologists can assist patients who feel anxious or claustrophobic.
