The area is numbed before treatment. A small incision is usually made on the inner or outer eyelid, depending on the size of the chalazion, and the contents are removed. The incision is closed with dissolvable stitches. A protective patch or pad may be provided. Possible after-effects include swelling, bruising and reddish-brown fluid leakage from the incision site. The average healing time is 7 to 10 days.
