MRI creates images of organs and other structures inside the body to support medical evaluation. The examination usually takes between 30 and 90 minutes. Patients may eat before the test and continue their usual medications unless given other instructions. Patients are provided with a hospital gown and robe and must remove jewellery, watches, keys, hair pins, hearing aids, wallets, wigs, dentures and other accessories. Patients with cardiac pacemakers, vascular clips, eye implants, heart valves or implanted electronic devices may not be able to undergo MRI. Tell the clinic or radiologist about metallic prostheses, cochlear implants, artificial heart valves, pregnancy or other metal in the body. Some examinations may require a contrast agent, injected into a vein or directly into a joint for orthopaedic purposes. Ear plugs are provided, and sedation may occasionally be required for claustrophobia.
