Magnetic Resonance Imaging

at Dr Todd Gothelf · Sydney

Details.

MRI creates detailed pictures of organs and other structures inside the body to assist with medical evaluation. The examination involves lying still on a motorised table while a series of scans are taken. You may eat before the test and continue usual medications unless given other instructions. Before the examination, remove jewellery, watches, keys, hair pins, hearing aids, wallets, wigs, dentures and other accessories. Tell the medical team if you have metallic prostheses, magnets in dentures, cochlear implants, artificial heart valves, implanted electronic devices or if you are pregnant. Some examinations may use a contrast agent, which can be injected into a vein or directly into a joint for orthopaedic purposes. Patients with cardiac pacemakers and most patients with certain implanted devices cannot undergo MRI. Sedation may occasionally be required for claustrophobia. A radiologist reviews the images and reports the findings.
