Surgery to join one spinal bone to another, often using internal fixation such as screws, rods or plates together with bone grafting or bone graft substitutes. It aims to restore spinal stability, correct deformity and prevent further injury when conditions such as injuries, arthritis, infections or tumours have compromised spinal stability. Spinal navigation may assist with implant placement in some lumbar, lumbosacral or pelvic fixation cases. Recovery can take longer than decompression surgery and may include planned rehabilitation or convalescence followed by outpatient physiotherapy.
