Uses high-energy laser light pulses to break tattoo ink pigments into tiny particles that are gradually absorbed by the body. Picosecond lasers are described as producing better results than Q-switched lasers and may require fewer treatments. The number of sessions depends on the tattoo's depth, number and color of inks, age, and size. Traditional laser treatment may take 12 to 20 sessions, while picosecond laser treatment is described as reducing the number of sessions to six to eight months. A local anesthetic may be used for discomfort, and mild redness and tenderness may occur for up to a week.
