Details.
Treatment is tailored to the severity of the ingrown toenail. Conservative therapy may include clearing sharp nail edges and tissue, gently lifting the nail edge, and placing waxed dental floss, cotton or a splint beneath it. Recurrent problems may require removal of part of the nail and its root or underlying tissue under local anaesthetic. The procedure is performed in the practice, and recovery is usually quick. Aftercare may include keeping the dressing dry, soaking the toe in warm salty water, applying a dressing, and receiving advice about footwear, sport and nail-cutting technique.
