A court-appointed Independent Children's Lawyer represents and promotes the best interests of the child or children, independent of the other parties. The service includes working with court-appointed experts, placing relevant evidence before the court, meeting with school-age children where appropriate, explaining the ICL's role, obtaining and conveying their wishes to the court while considering age, maturity and temperament, providing information about the court process, and facilitating negotiation and dispute resolution opportunities. The ICL is appointed by the court and funded by Victoria Legal Aid.
