An outpatient X-ray procedure used to evaluate whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether the inside of the uterus is normal. The procedure involves placing a speculum and cannula, then injecting iodine-containing contrast while fluoroscopic images are taken. It usually takes less than 5 minutes, is generally performed after the menstrual period ends but before ovulation, and may cause mild or moderate cramping. Patients can generally return to normal activities afterward, although some doctors recommend avoiding intercourse for a few days.
