An outpatient X-ray procedure used to assess whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether the inside of the uterus is normal. The cervix is accessed with a cannula, and iodine-containing contrast is injected into the uterus and fallopian tubes under fluoroscopy. The procedure usually takes less than 5 minutes. It is usually performed after menstruation ends but before ovulation. Mild or moderate cramping may occur for 5 to 10 minutes, and patients may be advised to arrange a ride home if experiencing pain. Normal activities can typically resume immediately, although some doctors recommend avoiding intercourse for a few days.
