An outpatient X-ray procedure used to determine whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether the inside of the uterus is normal. The uterus is filled with iodine-containing contrast through a cannula, and fluoroscopic images show the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. Usually performed after the menstrual period ends but before ovulation. Patients can immediately return to normal activities afterward, although some doctors recommend avoiding intercourse for a few days. Mild or moderate uterine cramping commonly lasts about 5 to 10 minutes, and patients may need someone to drive them home if they experience pain.
