Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

at Alex Gonzalez, MD · Boston

Details.

Outpatient X-ray procedure used to assess whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether the inside of the uterus is normal. The procedure involves placing a cannula through the cervix and injecting iodine-containing contrast while fluoroscopic images are taken. It usually takes less than 5 minutes, is typically performed after the menstrual period ends but before ovulation, and may cause mild or moderate uterine cramping. Patients can usually return to normal activities immediately afterward, although some doctors recommend avoiding intercourse for a few days.
