Outpatient X-ray procedure used to determine whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether the inside of the uterus is normal. The procedure involves placing a speculum and cannula, injecting iodine-containing contrast into the uterus, and observing the contrast as it travels through the uterus and fallopian tubes. It usually takes less than 5 minutes and is typically performed after the menstrual period ends but before ovulation. Mild or moderate cramping may occur for 5 to 10 minutes, and patients may be advised to arrange a ride home. Patients can generally return to normal activities immediately, although some doctors recommend avoiding intercourse for a few days.
