Outpatient x-ray procedure used to evaluate whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether the inside of the uterus is normal. A speculum and cannula are used to introduce iodine-containing contrast into the uterus and fallopian tubes while fluoroscopic images are taken. The procedure is usually performed after the menstrual period ends but before ovulation. Patients can usually return to normal activities immediately afterward, although some doctors recommend avoiding intercourse for a few days. Mild or moderate cramping commonly lasts about 5 to 10 minutes, and patients may need someone to drive them home if they experience pain.
