An outpatient X-ray procedure used to determine whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether the inside of the uterus is normal. A speculum and cannula are used to introduce iodine-containing contrast into the uterus while fluoroscopic images are taken. The procedure is usually performed after menstruation ends and before ovulation. Patients may experience mild or moderate cramping for 5 to 10 minutes, and some doctors recommend avoiding intercourse for a few days afterward.
