Hiatal Hernia and Fundoplication Surgery

at Prof Chris Berney · Sydney

Details.

Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery for patients with severe symptomatic gastro-oesophageal reflux disease despite optimal treatment, large paraoesophageal hiatus hernia, lifelong proton pump inhibitor requirements, medication non-compliance or serious adverse events, or patient preference. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, involves five small upper abdominal incisions, relocation of the stomach and lower oesophagus, repair of the diaphragmatic opening, and creation of an anti-reflux mechanism using a complete or partial fundoplication. Hospital stay is 24 to 48 hours, followed by a soft puree diet for 1 to 2 weeks. Waterproof dressings can be removed after 5 days, and follow-up is scheduled 2 weeks after surgery.
