A camera test to visualise the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It can help diagnose oesophageal and stomach cancers, inflammation, ulcers and narrowing of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Samples may be taken using small forceps for microscopic examination. The procedure usually lasts around five minutes and requires an empty stomach beforehand. It is carried out with either a local anaesthetic mouth spray or sedative injection. Results are usually provided before going home, or a few days later if biopsies were taken.
