A surgical weight loss procedure, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, that removes approximately 80 to 85% of the stomach to create a smaller, tubular-shaped stomach. The procedure restricts food intake and may alter gut hormones that regulate hunger, appetite and metabolism. Patients undergo pre-surgery medical and psychological assessments, followed by dietary and lifestyle changes, regular medical follow-up, gradual diet progression and ongoing monitoring. Suitable candidates may include people with BMI of 35 or more without comorbidities, BMI of 30 or more with certain comorbidities, Asian patients with BMI of 27.5 or more, and those unable to achieve sustained healthy weight loss through prior efforts. Insured patients have an out-of-pocket cost of $5,850, while uninsured patients have an out-of-pocket cost of $19,750. Costs include surgeon, surgical assistant, anaesthetist, hospital, dietitian and exercise physiologist support for one year, and a psychologist consultation.
