Details.
A detailed ultrasound assessing the structure and function of the fetal heart prior to birth. It can identify normal cardiac structure from early in the second trimester, from approximately 13 weeks of pregnancy. Reasons for fetal echocardiography include suspected structural heart disease, family history of congenital heart disease or cardiomyopathy, fetal chromosomal abnormalities, extracardiac malformations, increased nuchal translucency, maternal metabolic disorders, fetal arrhythmias, monochorionic twin pregnancies, maternal exposure to certain medications or viruses during pregnancy, and fetal hydrops.
