Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is a gastrointestinal endoscopy procedure used to examine and treat problems within the bile and pancreatic ducts, pancreas, liver or gallbladder. The procedure may involve contrast dye and X-rays, sphincterotomy, stent placement or gallstone removal. Preparation includes fasting for approximately 8 hours and discussing medications such as blood thinners, supplements and insulin with your doctor. Intravenous medication is provided so you are completely asleep during the procedure. The procedure usually lasts upwards of 1 hour, followed by approximately 2 hours of monitoring in the endoscopy area. You will need someone to transport you home or stay with you overnight depending on the procedure.
