A medical procedure to reset the heart rhythm to normal, commonly used to treat atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and atrial tachycardia, and sometimes ventricular arrhythmias. It is carried out under a brief general anaesthetic or heavy sedation. The procedure itself usually takes around 10 minutes and is typically performed as a day case, with discharge usually possible soon afterwards. Patients should arrange to be accompanied away from hospital and should not drive on the day of the procedure.
