Members of the public can instruct a barrister directly without using a solicitor. Services may include legal advice, document drafting and representation in court. Barristers will advise if solicitor involvement would be beneficial. A fixed fee is agreed in advance where possible, although an hourly rate may be more appropriate. Additional costs may apply for travel or copying original documents, and VAT is added unless an exemption applies.
