A dental crown covers the whole tooth to conceal chips, decay, discolouration or large fillings, while protecting the tooth from further damage. The treatment includes checking the tooth for infection, preparing the tooth, taking impressions and recording its colour, fitting a temporary crown between appointments, and fixing the permanent crown in place with dental cement. Crowns can also restore teeth following root canal treatment, support a dental bridge or be fixed to a dental implant. Local anaesthetic is used during preparation and fitting.
