A crown restores the structure and functionality of a damaged tooth by replacing its outer structure. It may be suitable for teeth with multiple fillings, extensive decay or general damage, and can also restore a tooth after root canal treatment. Treatment involves checking the internal tooth structure for infection, preparing the tooth, taking impressions and recording its colour, fitting a temporary crown between appointments, then securing the permanent crown with dental cement. Local anaesthetic is used during preparation and fitting. Crown care includes brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and regular dental check-ups. Whitening treatment may be preferable before choosing the crown shade, as whitening does not affect crowns.
