A crown covers the whole tooth to conceal chips, decay, discolouration or large fillings, and protect damaged teeth. The treatment includes checking the tooth for infection, preparing the tooth, taking impressions and recording its colour, fitting a temporary crown between appointments, and permanently fixing the finished crown with dental cement. Crowns can also restore teeth following root canal treatment, support a dental bridge or be fixed to a dental implant. Local anaesthetic is used during preparation and fitting. Patients should maintain oral hygiene, avoid very hard foods and attend regular dental check-ups.
