A dental crown is a cap placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, or appearance. Crowns may protect a weak or damaged tooth, support a large filling or dental bridge, cover a discolored or misshapen tooth, or restore dental implants. The procedure usually takes two visits. The first visit includes tooth preparation, a digital scan or impression, and placement of a temporary crown. The second visit includes removal of the temporary crown, fit checking, cementing of the permanent crown, and care instructions. Avoid sticky, chewy, or crunchy foods while wearing a temporary crown, and avoid hard foods for the first few days after the procedure.
