Bridges can help restore a smile, improve appearance and facial support, assist with eating and speaking, and prevent adjacent teeth from drifting. Suitability depends on the health of the supporting teeth, their pulp and gums. Root canal treatment may sometimes be required before the bridge is made. The procedure typically involves two appointments: teeth are trimmed, an impression is taken for laboratory fabrication, and a temporary bridge is cemented at the first appointment. Usually about two weeks later, the temporary bridge is removed and the permanent bridge is cemented. Routine dental visits and excellent home care are required, including flossing underneath the false tooth. Local anaesthetic may be used to manage discomfort during treatment.
