An in-office examination of the cervix and vaginal tissue using a magnifying colposcope to inspect for abnormalities. It may include applying a solution to help identify suspicious cells and taking a small tissue sample for biopsy when necessary. Common reasons include abnormal Pap test results, precancerous tissue, genital warts, cervicitis, pelvic pain, irregular bleeding, or treatment follow-up. The procedure typically takes 10-20 minutes. Some stinging or burning from the solution, pain, or light bleeding for a couple of days may occur afterward.
