Testing can be performed using a urine sample or swab samples from the vagina, mouth, throat, rectum, or area around the cervix. Self-swabbing of the vagina or rectum is available in the obstetrician-gynecologist's office. Yearly screening is recommended for women younger than 25 and for women 25 and older with risk factors.
