Diagnosis includes a physical examination of the feet and toes, questions about symptoms, and observation of gait and posture. Digital X-rays or an MRI may be ordered if necessary. Treatment may include changing shoes, wearing inserts and heel pads, taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, elevating the foot, applying an ice pack, or surgical intervention such as removing damaged tissue, removing part of the bone, realigning toe joints, or fusion surgery.
