A fusion procedure performed through an incision at the side of the body or near the rib cage, or through smaller incisions between the ribs using a camera. It may be performed with posterior fusion to help prevent the crankshaft phenomenon, in which continued spinal growth worsens the curve after posterior fusion. The procedure is usually performed around the same time as the main posterior surgery, before or after it.
