The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic before the colorectal surgeon removes the skin tag with a scalpel. The wound is cleaned and closed with dissolving stitches. The procedure usually takes around 20 minutes. Some swelling and bruising may occur but should subside within a few days, and most patients can return to normal activities immediately. The treatment may be performed alongside haemorrhoid treatment, with cauterisation sometimes used to help prevent recurrence. A consultation is provided to assess whether the treatment is suitable.
