A silver-coloured filling made from an alloy of mercury, silver, tin, copper and zinc. Amalgam is durable and designed to withstand the grinding and chewing forces of molar teeth. The procedure includes local anaesthetic, cleaning and shaping the tooth, placement of a band if required, and packing and carving the amalgam. It hardens within a few minutes but takes 24 hours to set fully.
