JCB Bioethics Seminar Series

Free weekly seminars on a wide variety of bioethics topics, featuring speakers from the local, national and international bioethics community. The seminars are open to the public, take place online during the 2026-27 season, and are livestreamed via YouTube with recordings available afterwards. Registration is required through Eventbrite, and the direct link to each week's seminar is emailed to registered participants on the day of the seminar.

Alloway Lecture

An annual lecture series bringing one or more internationally respected bioethics experts to the University to discuss ethical aspects of organ transplantation when possible, and other topics in medical ethics. Speakers have international stature, have made important contributions to bioethics, and approach bioethical issues from established Judeo-Christian principles.

Ethics and Governance of AI for Health Lecture Series

A partnered lecture series hosted by the Joint Centre for Bioethics and the Women's College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care. It examines ethical issues posed by AI in health care and public health, and governance strategies for ethically sound oversight of health-related AI applications. The series includes interdisciplinary public presentations from invited leaders in the field.

Sue MacRae Lecture on Ethics and Patient-Centred Care

A lecture exploring the felt ethical experience of people facing life-threatening illness in relation to themselves, family members, caregivers and systems of care. It examines patient-centred and relationship-centred theoretical frameworks and best practices addressing ethical problems from patient and family perspectives.

11th Annual JCB Research & Awards Celebration

Sat, 22 Aug

A celebration of the accomplishments of Joint Centre for Bioethics members, students, graduates, faculty, and ethicists for 2021-22. The awards presentation will be held either in person or virtually. Faculty recognitions include the Christine Harrison Bioethics Education Award for Integration of Theory and Practice and the Ross Upshur Course Director Award. Student awards include the Larry Librach Prize in Ethics and End of Life Care, Mervis-Simon Family Award in Bioethics, Martin McKneally Capstone Project Award, and Peter A. Singer Award in Bioethics. Registration and awards call for submissions will be sent in Spring 2023.

Innovation Showcase Poster Display & Competition

Sat, 22 Aug

A showcase of recent scholarly work by Joint Centre for Bioethics community members, including students and trainees, faculty, ethicists, and alumni. There are student or trainee and open poster competitions, with awards for the best poster in each category. Original posters and posters previously presented at conferences during the 2022-23 academic year may be submitted. Posters must be delivered by 2:00 pm on the day before the event for inclusion in the display and competition, and submissions must be received by 5:00 pm on a date to be determined.
