John B. Wong, MD Professor of Medicine and general internist, is the Chief of the Division of Clinical Decision Making in the Department of Medicine at Tufts Medical Center and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr Wong received his MD from the University of Chicago and had postgraduate training in internal medicine at Tufts Medical Center including a National Library of Medicine sponsored medical informatics fellowship in Clinical Decision Making. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Past President of the Society for Medical Decision Making, the statistical editor in decision and cost-effectiveness analysis for the Annals of Internal Medicine at the American College of Physicians. He has been a member of guideline committees for the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease Practice (AASLD), the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR), OMERACT (Outcome Measures in Rheumatology), and the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Antithrombotic Therapy. To help develop quality of care measures for the National Quality Forum, he has also been an invited member to the American Medical Association Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI) Work Groups on Coronary Artery Disease/Hypertension, Heart Failure, Cardiac Imaging and Hepatitis C for which he serves as the current co-chair. For the American College of Cardiology Foundation, he has been asked to participate on Technical Panels to assess appropriate use criteria for diagnostic cardiac catheterization and for the detection and risk assessment of ischemic heart disease. Having published over 100 peer reviewed articles, his research focuses on the application of decision analysis to medical issues to help patients, physicians, and policymakers choose among alternative tests, treatments or policies, thereby promoting rational evidence-based efficient and effective patient-centered care that reflects individualized risk assessment and patient preferences. Starting initially with the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research Patient Outcome Research Team in Ischemic Heart Disease, Dr. Wong has helped develop award winning shared decision making programs as the editor for heart disease for the non-for-profit Informed Medical Decisions Foundation, and was invited to be a primary care physician representative on the Health Policy Statement on Patient-centered Care for the American College of Cardiology Foundation.
