Data for the Defense: Effective Use of Sentencing Data Analytics

This online webinar explains sentencing data analytics and how defense attorneys can use data tools to make sentencing arguments and provide objective, data-driven insights to judges. Participants will learn about tools from the Sentencing Commission and the Sentencing Resource Counsel's free Sentencing Data Analyzer Tool, and how to use these tools to advocate for the lowest possible sentence. Registration is limited to people who provide services pursuant to the federal Criminal Justice Act.

In Her Defense: Beyond Binary, Affirming Advocacy for Transgender Clients

This online webinar provides strategies for advocating for transgender clients throughout the federal criminal process. The program explores gender identity in client communication, trial strategy, mitigation and sentencing advocacy, and representation during pretrial detention and Bureau of Prisons custody. Presenters will discuss housing, safety, medical care, and protecting clients' rights. Registration is limited to people who provide services pursuant to the federal Criminal Justice Act.

2026 Train the Trainers Workshop

This in-person workshop is designed to enhance training skills and expand the pool of experienced legal professionals available to serve as faculty at local legal education programs for CJA Panel Attorneys and Federal Defender Employees, and at national Defender Services Office Training Division events. Participants will learn and apply adult learning principles, training design, small group facilitation, and interactive teaching techniques. The workshop is open to CJA Panel Attorneys, Federal Defender Employees, and others who provide services under the Criminal Justice Act. Participants must bring a laptop with PowerPoint or other presentation software and submit a proposed training topic two weeks before the workshop. Attendance is limited, participants must apply for acceptance, and registration is limited to 49 people.
