Childcare support for adult learners

If you are aged 20 or older and have an income below £27,000 per year, or are part of a family with a combined income below £35,000 per year, you may be eligible for support with childcare. Support depends on the number of hours per week you are in college for your course and whether you receive help from another scheme, such as the government free 30 hours of childcare support.

Free college meals

You may be eligible for free college meals for the days you are timetabled if you are aged 16 to 18, or 19 to 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan, and you or your guardians receive an eligible benefit or meet the stated income criteria. Eligible benefits include Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999, the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit with annual gross income up to £16,190 and Universal Credit with net earnings not exceeding the equivalent of £7,400 per year.

Vulnerable Young Person Bursary

You may be eligible for a vulnerable bursary if you are aged between 16 and 19, have educational financial need and are in care or recently left local authority care, receive Income Support or Universal Credit, receive Disability Living Allowance in your name and either Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit, or receive Personal Independence Payment in your name and either Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit.

16 to 19 Discretionary Bursary

You may be eligible for a discretionary bursary if you are aged between 16 and 19, or 19 to 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan, have a household income up to £35,000 and have financial need. Discretionary bursaries are means-tested and intended to support travel, books, equipment, exam fees and other essential course-related costs. The amount received is based on educational financial needs. Travel support is based on how far a learner travels to their centre of study and takes account of TfL and other transport provider discount schemes.

Course fee instalment plan

If you choose to pay your course fees yourself, for some or all of your course, you may be eligible to pay in instalments: 25% of the total course fees at enrolment, with the balance spread equally across five monthly instalments of 15% each on the first of consecutive months. For eligible short courses, the plan will be revised so that all fees are paid at least one month before the course end date.

Free Level 3 courses for eligible learners

Learners aged between 19 and 23 without an existing full Level 3 qualification may be able to study a Level 3 course for free, subject to checks of prior qualifications and receipt of JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, Income Support or a low wage. Some Level 3 courses may also be free for learners aged 24 or over without an existing Level 3 qualification who are unemployed or earning a low wage, or learners aged 19 to 23 who are London residents, working and receiving a low wage. Current evidence of benefits or low wages is required. Two-year Extended Diplomas, A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas are excluded.

Most Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2 courses are free, regardless of your age or income, as long as you meet the residency requirements. Proof of income or employment, or evidence of benefits if you are unemployed, will be checked at enrolment.

Free courses for learners aged 16 to 18

If you are aged 16 to 18 on 31 August in the year you are looking to study a further education course with us and meet the residency requirements, your course will be free. You may also be asked to pay for exam or coursework resits, forgotten or lost college ID cards and educational visits.
