Serve camp participants through manual labor and personal service work. Duties included clean-up, set-up, moving wine cases, chairs, tables, beer kegs, firewood and luggage, building fires, cooking meals, stocking refrigerators, delivering newspapers, making coffee, serving cocktails, washing dishes, scrubbing floors, doing laundry, making beds, and cleaning showers and campgrounds. Valets followed detailed rules and procedures, worked under close supervision, adhered to a prescribed dress code, and were required to be available on a 24-hour basis. The work could involve 16 to 18 hours per day, evenings, weekends, on-call time, and more than seven consecutive days without a day off.
