Independent lawyers authorised to act as impartial witnesses in the signing of legal documents. Notaries commonly handle affidavits, property deeds, wills, trusts and Powers of Attorney, as well as oaths, affirmations, statutory declarations, document authentication, attesting signatures, consulate authentication, work visa documentation, foreign transactions, translation verification and other notarial services. Notaries are regulated legal professionals and members of The Notaries Society. Applicants generally need to be at least 21, of good character, and meet the qualification requirements set out in the Notaries (Qualification) Rules 2017. Most applicants are solicitors, while other qualifying legal professionals may also apply. The Diploma in Notarial Practice is a two-year distance learning course, and newly appointed notaries have their practice supervised by another notary for the first two or three years.
