Provides in-hours and out-of-hours general and specialist ophthalmology services, including night shifts. The role involves managing complicated cases, supervising and teaching junior registrars, and undertaking unsupervised cataract surgery depending on experience. Medical Officers may become credentialed in laser retinopexies, peripheral iridotomies and tap and inject for endophthalmitis. Overseas trained applicants can gain experience in the Australian system and culture, learn from eminent ophthalmologists and participate in monthly teaching activities. Applicants have usually completed at least four years of ophthalmology residency and passed the RACE or equivalent. International and national police checks are required.
