Basel's carnival begins at 04:00 on the Monday after Ash Wednesday with the Morgenstraich, a marching musical procession in near darkness illuminated by lanterns. The carnival lasts 72 hours and ends at 04:00 on Thursday morning with the Endstraich. During the festivities, costumed participants and their cliques take over Basel's streets, pubs and shops.
